Next Action: Come May 5th for the Carnival

How am I doing? I was able to interact witht he Students of Marina Middle School today, it was fun. Three girls helped me go around signing kids up, their names are Jacky, Bianca, and Estella. I was amazed on how sociable they were, they got along with pretty much everyone from the school. We were very successful in getting 33 kids to help set-up, clean-up the booths.
I noticed the unity of the teachers with the councelors. I was able to be with Irene when she would call down the students who had F's and I noticed that all the kids were very eager to bring them up, I also noticed that Irene would let them do most of the talking instead of vice-versa. She let them decide on what they would do to raise their grades instead of her telling them what to do. I asked Irene why she did this and she said it works better for kids because they come up with their own solution to the problem. I am so eager to come back May 5th!

The kids were very nice, I noticed that the trouble-makers would hang around at the counceling office, they would answer the teachers with attitude I was shocked by this because the teachers would keep their calm.

I have been seeing how Irene works with her sixth graders and it really does inspire me to become a councelor, even though at times I'm terrified of all the work she has!

Day 12

Date of Service: April 19, 2011 Time Spent: 2hrs. Total Time: 20hrs.

Next Action: Teach the girls how to be organized and also help Irene with TGIF.
- Make more posters
- Go to Marina during my Spring Break so I could sign kids up during lunch for the booths.

How am I doing? Salvaged Childhood is a really good resource for councelors, especially like this bok because its for young girls. Irene had me read the TGIF section of the book which stands for- Thank God I'm Female, the lesson was on self-esteem, and of all the good reasons to be a female.
I made about a dozen posters and hung them around the school today, I also got to meet the After school program advisor Ms. Lugo, she helped me hang some around. I have to come during school on one of my spring break days, for sure it will be on a Tuesday so I could meet up with the Beading Group. During their lunch I have to go around and sign kids up for the booths. This will be a good way for me to interact with all of the students of Marina.

Action: -Presented my topic on stealing to Irene.
- Made an activity for the girls involving the topic of stealing, also presented it to Irene so she could determine if I could use it for the meeting.

Next Action: - Make more flowers for Carnival.
- Make more posters!

How am I doing? Irene liked my topic on stealing but she chose to speak about it instead because she had a good lecture on it. She says that these girls need to learn that stealing is bad, and immoral. I helped Irene xerox the notes she had for her files.
I then went to the After school program and helped kids with their homework.

Friday, April 15, 2011

Day 10

Date of service: April 15, 2011 Time Spent: 1hr. Total spent: 18hrs.

Action: - Helped Irene organize the booths/ different activities of the booths.
- Helped make some paper flowers for carnival.

Next Action:- Help the girls make bracelets to sell the day of carnival.

How am I doing? When arriving to Marina, Irene gave me a bag of beads. I had to help the girls make bracelets, so we could finish sooner. I also had to sort all of the beads out in individual baggies so the girls wouldn't steal beads.
Irene and I came up with a topic for the next meeting which would be on stealing. Many girls have been taking materials from the club, and this is unacceptable. Because of this we have to now count the beads we give them.

- Went to the After school program and helped the girls with their homework.

Next Action: Come up with new topic to teach girls on Tuesday.
- Need to look into the books of Mariposa and Salvaged Childhood for topics.

How am I doing? Irene has had me choosing topics for the girls. I have been focusing on self- esteem because as sixth graders they are the underclass men and will be picked on. So I chose to talk to them about how to love themselves and not let ignorant people put them down.
I chose to do the topic on self-esteem because I remember when I was a six grade student having low self-esteem because I let people's opinion get to me.

Wednesday, April 13, 2011

Day 8

Date of Service: April 13, 2011 Time Spent: 1hrs. Total Time: 16hrs.

Action: Went to Irene's meeting after school for councelors.
- Helped out the youth after school program with homework, some girls from the beading group were there.

Next Action: Talk to the girls about the importance of keeping up their grades at such an early age.
- Interview one of the girls from the group, and ask her why she decided to join the Beading Friendship Circle club.

How am I doing? At first I was a little timid to meet all of the staff, since it is something I don't normally do especially with teachers. Irene was shocked to see me timid with some of the staff because she is used to seeing me very energetic all of the time. I mentioned I was a little bit, overall I came to the conclusion that I have nothing to be timid about. My plan for tomorrow is to interview a sixth grade girl from the beading group so I could ask her why she joined the club.

Tuesday, April 12, 2011

How am I doing? So far we are very organized with our event of May Carnival, we got other clubs to help out with making their own boothes. We have kids requesting a dunk machine, and we are still waiting for it to be approved by the principle Mrs. Fong.
Overll the meeting with the girls went great, we decided to keep the prices that the first group of girls had came up with. All we need to do now is advertise and hopefully when I come back next week we have more booths and activities.

Monday, April 11, 2011

Day 6

Date of Service: April 11, 2011 Time spent: 2hrs. Total time: 13hrs.

- helped Irene photo-copy lessions from the book of Mariposa- another councelors book for young women.

Next Action: Meeting tomorrow ith the beading group, we need to discuss the prices and who will be in charge of what activity.

How am I doing? I made a sign-up sheet with Microsoft word, for the day of carnival so the kids can start signing up. I also helped irene Xerox pages from the book of Mariposa, which Irene will give a mini-lesson on social skills, such as how to go beyond your comfort zone.
I learned that positive attitude is key in being a leader because no one wants a pessimist. Irene taught me that in order for her to become a councelor she had to learn to be patient and have a passion for helping others.

Friday, April 8, 2011

Day 5

Date of Service: April 8, 2011 Time Spent: 2hrs. Total time: 11 hrs.

Action: Brought beads and wire for the bracelets, some girls got to make their own.
- Decided that bracelets be sold for $1-3 due to the different stones and sizes, necklaces would be .50 cents or 2 for $1, Snow cones $1 and Face painting $1.

Next Action: Meet with the whole group of girls on tuesday to make sure they agree with the prices we selected. Start making the bracelets asap.

How am i doing? A group of girls from the club stopped by at Irene's office and decided to make thier own bracelets, they decided that the bracelets should cost more than the necklaces because they are putting more effort in making them. Decided that $1-3 would be a resonable price. Now all we have to do is talking it over witht he entire group of girls in the meeting on Tuesday.
We also came up with the prices for the face painting and snow cones.

Thursday, April 7, 2011

Day 4

- Decided that we would sell Necklaces, Bracelets, Snow cones, and provide face painting on the day of Carnival.
-Talked about were the money raised from carnival would go.

Next Action: Decide the prices for the items sold.
- Start making necklaces and bracelets.

How am i doing? Today was a long day, we got a lot done. Me and Irene brainstormed on what we would sell, we have not yet decided on the prices because we want the girls to decide on the price range once they have already finished making their necklaces and bracelets.
We talked about how we would get the materials such as the beads and wire for the necklaces and bracelets, Irene was going to check on that. Decided that the money would go to the Club as well as other clubs who contribute to the festival.

Wednesday, April 6, 2011

Day 3

Date Of Service: April 6, 2011 Time spent 3hrs Total time: 7hrs.

Action: Talked to Irene about how she formed the club, and why she did it. As well as speaking to irene about what she does in her job and how she became interested in it.

Next Action: Teach the Beading group how to mae the paper tissue flowers and also plan the activites for the May carnival.

How am I doing? Today I learned a little more about my mentor, I wasnt able to do it on Monday due to no time. Overall I was amazed on how long she has been a councelor, 26 yrs. She has worked in schools all over the Bay Area.
what i enjoyed the most was the behind the scenes feel of the school, I got to understand a councelors job, for example Irene is in charge of 300 6th graders in the school, she has to make sure they all have good GPA's for high school. When a student gets an F, she immediately sends him down and speaks to him. It was interesting to see how the majority of the kids are worried about their GPA's, and their only in middle school!

Tuesday, April 5, 2011

Day 2

Date of service: April 5, 2011 Time Spent: 2hrs Total time: 4hrs

Action- Met with the Beading Friendship Circle, started planning the activities for the May 5th Carnival.

Next Action: Start making flowers out of colorful tissue paper, as well as teach the girls social skills- This lesson will be taken from a book for Councelors callled salvaged childhood.

How am I doing? The Beading Friendship circle is a group of sixth grade girls who joined this club to meet new friends. This club meets every Tuesday. As sixth graders they felt lost and found it hard to meet new people, Irene realized this and decided to form this club. I learned that Irene is teaching them social skills from a book for councelors called salvaged childhood, this books main target is young woman- preadolescents.
I really enjoyed the girls maturity, the respect they gave to me and overall the meaning of the club is beautiful- its a calling of all cultures, Irene said.

Monday, April 4, 2011

Day one

Date of Service: April 4, 2011 Time spent: 2hrs Total time: 2hrs.

Action- Got to meet the Staff at Marina Middle School
- Talked with Irene, my mentor, about her beading group

Next Action ( what and when): I plan to meet with the beading friendship group tomorrow as well as start organizing the May 5th Carnival

How am I doing? I met with Irene at Marina Middle School, I was completely blown away with the size of the school, it is enormous. Irene talked to me about would I would have to do for her and the hours I would have to do every day.
After that, she took me on a tour around the school and I got to meet Ms. Busche and Ms. Ling two councelors at the school as well. I also got to meet Mrs. Fong, the principal of this school. Overall i was warmely welcomed and the students were great, I really hope it stays this way!
